Board-approved scholarship allocation — up to $10,000

Two awards. Two ways to be seen.

The TKN Big Feelings Welcome Scholarship

"Growth deserves to be celebrated, too."

Recognizes a young person who may experience emotions deeply or face moments that are harder to navigate, but is actively learning to reflect, take responsibility, communicate, repair, ask for help, try again, and grow. They do not have to have mastered it. This is not a reward for perfect behavior.

Each scholarship winner can receive up to $500 toward their creative outlet, including eligible classes, activities, and related supplies.

What we look for

  • Self-reflection
  • Perseverance and willingness to try again
  • Accountability and repair
  • Communicating feelings or needs
  • Developing healthy coping tools
  • Asking for help
  • Meaningful personal growth witnessed over time

The TKN WOW! Scholarship

"You did something worth noticing."

Recognizes a young person whose actions make a coach, teacher, mentor, family member, teammate, or community member stop and say WOW. The moment does not have to be big or public: including someone left out, helping a teammate, volunteering, showing sportsmanship, standing up for someone, or creating something that helps others.

Each scholarship winner can receive up to $500 toward their creative outlet, including eligible classes, activities, and related supplies.

What we look for

  • Kindness and inclusion
  • Initiative or service
  • Courage and leadership
  • Generosity and empathy
  • Sportsmanship and teamwork
  • Positive impact at school, on a team, at home, or in the community

Who can be nominated

  • Ages 6–18, San Diego County
  • North County residence is a preference among otherwise comparable applications
  • Category fit is considered first, then greater priority to financial and access barriers
  • All eligible applications are welcome — crisis and diagnosis are never prerequisites
  • Supports creative outlets within San Diego County, including art and visual arts classes, music and sports, plus related supplies within the award limit
  • Each category award is up to $500, including related materials such as art, music, and sports supplies
  • Up to 10 awards per category; $10,000 aggregate program ceiling
  • A child meeting requirements for both categories may receive up to $500 in each ($1,000 combined) — no more than one award per category per child in this funding round
  • Provider/supplier-direct payment preferred; awards depend on eligibility and available funds and are not guaranteed

When applications open

When applications open, families will be asked for a short explanation of financial or access barriers and an activity quote or supply estimate. The proposed activity must be age-appropriate, located within San Diego County, and have verifiable costs and cancellation/refund terms. Provider- or supplier-direct payment is preferred. Application and submission details will be announced here. Applications are not open yet.

No diagnosis required

TKN does not require medical, mental-health, behavioral-health, developmental, or educational diagnoses; medical or therapy records; medication information; IEP, 504, or special-education records; trauma details; or other private clinical or educational documentation. TKN does not diagnose or evaluate conditions in selection. Nominations should focus on strengths, observed growth, a meaningful moment, and what the nominator wants the child to know about their progress — avoiding unnecessary sensitive disclosures. Guardian consent is required for minors; applicants age 18 consent for themselves. Written review and conflict-of-interest safeguards apply. Publicity, photo, testimonial, and social-media consent is separate and optional; refusal does not affect selection.
